Executive Director, Executive and Professional Education

The Executive Director provides leadership and strategic management of Executive and Professional Education (EPE) at George Mason University. The Executive Director will position George Mason University as a premier provider of EPE to public and private sector organizations in the national capital region and beyond. Working with the EPE Board, the Executive Director is responsible for developing and implementing a strong strategic vision, aggressively identifying and pursuing growth opportunities, managing resources, and overseeing the quality of program delivery. The Executive Director is expected to recruit and manage a highly-trained professional staff; develop and manage the EPE budget with P/L responsibilities; lead business development activities while engaging the Mason faculty community and fostering cross-unit collaboration in the development and delivery of programs. This position reports to the Vice President of Academic Innovation and New Ventures in the Office of the Provost. For strategic direction and oversight, the Executive Director is accountable to the EPE Board – composed of representatives from senior administration, academic deans, and faculty representatives. The office of Executive and Professional Education is an administrative unit of the Provost's Office.


  • Serves as the university-wide leader that fosters growth and quality of Mason's executive and professional education offerings;
  • Generates enthusiastic support and participation from Mason faculty while building branding and reputation among business and public-sector leaders;
  • Develops and implements a strategic plan that demonstrates significant EPE scope and revenue growth over the next five years;
  • Manages a team of educational, administrative and operational personnel, working closely with faculty and staff across the university, to deliver custom, open enrollment and hybrid program offerings;
  • Leverages the expertise and reputation of Mason faculty, and the strengths of schools, colleges, institutes and programs to deliver world-class executive education;
  • Identify and cultivate business relationships;
  • create innovative solutions to address executive development needs for clients;
  • Engages faculty and deans across the university in EPE collaborations, new program development and program delivery;
  • Works with deans and chairs to develop and expand faculty competencies in EPE;
  • Manages P/L for EPE with annual performance and growth targets.
  • Prepares regular reports for EPE board and university executive leadership detailing current business, growth opportunities and financial performance;
  • Integrates EPE offerings with Mason's academic programs and research priorities;
  • Measures the effectiveness of all EPE programming to ensure quality;
  • Delivers EPE programming using technology as appropriate;
  • With guidance from EPE board, assembles and manages an external advisory board composed of business and public-sector leaders; and
  • Manages relationships with EPE partners.

Required Qualifications:

  • An advanced graduate degree;
  • Relationship sales and marketing acumen with proven ability to grow a profitable business professional unit;
  • Familiarity with the latest in executive development design and delivery techniques including technology-enabled innovations;
  • Strong capability to communicate credibly with executives at the highest levels in leading corporations, and with other key stakeholders (internal and external);
  • International experience and global perspective;
  • Experience working with a diverse team and clients;
  • Superior communication skills at all levels with the ability to engage and enroll clients and team members in contributing to the mission of the organizations; and
  • Clear managerial skills leading and providing direction to a highly productive team in a fast-paced, high-growth business environment committed to exceptional quality.
In addition, qualified candidates will have a proven record for leading and growing an executive and professional development organization and demonstrated experience in at least one of the following roles:

  • Serving in a leadership role within a higher education setting; or
  • Serving as chief learning officer or as the head of executive leadership education/development in a large company well regarded for excellence and innovation in executive development; or
  • Extensive tenure as a senior management consultant in a relevant practice within a large strategy or human resources consulting firm, or well-regarded boutique executive development firm.
