“Leaders’ Edge – Winning through Uncertainty”

How do you foster high-potential senior managers to create new revenue streams and business solutions, whilst accepting uncertainty risk and embracing innovation?

Following the global financial crisis, Fletcher Building (FB) – the New Zealand’s largest integrated infrastructure company - had been caught in a five-year trough of difficult market conditions. At the same time, a major earthquake in the city of Christchurch presented both an opportunity and a threat.

In 2012, FB embarked on a transformation programme to put the company on a higher profit growth trajectory. The newly-appointed Group CEO and his leadership team introduced “FB Unite”, a change initiative aimed at unlocking innovative thinking among employees in a competitive environment; dismantling silo mentalities; and finding new synergies/efficiencies to deliver maximum value from assets employed across the business divisions.

The Leaders’ Edge programme - designed in collaboration with the University of Auckland Business School (UABS) - was a direct response to help propel FB’s leadership cadre into winning through uncertainty.

To spearhead this growth ambition, FB’s divisional CEOs, sponsored and endorsed five strategic business initiatives (SBIs). Teams of high-potential senior managers were assigned to work on each SBI. These managers were enrolled in the Leaders’ Edge programme to support them in delivering ‘real’ results for the FB group. These teams would serve as role models for the innovation and transformation required across the group to lead change.

The Leaders’ Edge has already delivered demonstrable and impressive returns on investment for FB. It brought results that have contributed significantly to FB’s transformation process and business imperatives. Importantly it has also fostered the leadership behaviours desired.

In this session, Joanne Nicol and Ivan Moss will share their success stories but also point out different hurdles they came across during these last 3 years. You will learn how this innovative and challenging programme continues to inspire FB leaders and will certainly get ideas to bring back home!
