"Developing International Leadership Talent and Stimulating Significant Culture Change"

In the fast-tracking of participating high potential leaders, FrieslandCampina, one of the world’s largest global dairy co-operatives, is building its international leadership capability and stimulating the significant culture change envisioned in its route2020 strategy. Through the creation of a talent pipeline which is highly capable and internationally mobile, the organisation is ensuring it is stronger, more innovative, responsive and future proofed.

This is critical to the delivery of FrieslandCampina’s climate-neutral growth ambitions and in the preparation of the fast approaching 2015 European Milk quota abolishment.

Although framed as a talent initiative, what was needed was as much about organisation development and culture change as it was talent development.
“This initiative goes beyond a talent development process. It touches hearts and minds and it creates the core of the leadership we need to ensure the delivery of our strategy”, says Willem van der Lee, Global Director of Talent and Leadership Development at FrieslandCampina.

The development initiative brings to life new ways of working which are non-hierarchical, networked and empowering. The process lasts between 12-18 months and weaves multiple workplace initiatives with leadership development events and catalytic experiences ranging from market inquiries in Shanghai and Ho Chi Minh City, working in an orphanage in Vietnam and milking cows at dairy farms. To date over 300 leaders have participated in cohorts of around 30.

Of the programme Lindsey Masson, Executive Director of Corporate Business Development at Ashridge Business School, explains:  “It takes future leaders on a true discovery journey: discovering themselves, discovering FrieslandCampina, customers, consumers, stakeholders. The Catalytic Experiences bring the outside in, create possibilities and expand global mind-sets. Overall we’re generating a strong sense of personal responsibility and shifting assumptions about what is and what is not possible at both a very personal and organisational level.”

“The creation of a pool of future leaders who embrace personal leadership as a starting point for change makes a significant impact in accountability and drive, and has resulted in an acceleration of initiatives throughout the whole organisation. Even more importantly, it started the culture change around leadership”, says Willem van der Lee.
