“Business Unit Strategy at Lonza – Linking Executive Education and Strategy Development”

In 2010 Lonza, a leading international supplier to the pharmaceutical, health care and life sciences sector, was facing numerous challenges, which were to be addressed by a new strategy. Lonza had worked with different approaches in the past and now opted for an innovative approach together with the University of St. Gallen. In a customized action-learning-process Lonzas’ 150 top managers developed and committed to new strategies for Lonzas’ business units while improving their strategic and leadership skills and their peer networks at the same time.

In this session we will:
  1. Guide you through the strategy development process, which was jointly developed, by Lonza and the University of St. Gallen.
  2. Discuss why Lonza chose this approach and how a provider of Executive Education can be a good alternative to management consultants when it comes to strategy development.
  3. Explore the roles which participants, faculty, top management and HR play in order to make such a program a success.
  4. Engage on a discussion on some of the success factors and potential pitfalls of such an approach
  • Paul Adang, Senior Vice President Human Resources, Corporate HR, Lonza, CH
  • Philipp Guthof, Director of Corporate Programmes, Executive School of Management, Technology and Law, University of St. Gallen, CH
  • Markus Frank, Executive Director, Executive School of Management, Technology and Law, University of St. Gallen, CH
