EFMD EU Affairs 2013 Workshop: Management Matters (by Invitation Only)

Tuesday, 23 April 2013 in Brussels (Location to be defined)

Key stakeholders will be invited to join this workshop to discuss importance of managerial & entrepreneurial practice and capacity building for future development of Europe.

Representatives from the European institutions, the community of management education & research, corporations, think tanks and public services officers will be invited to join this dialogue. This workshop is the follow-up of the EFMD Round-Table “Management Skills for Growth” conducted by the EFMD at the European Business Summit in April 2012.

The following themes will be addressed:
  • The impact of managerial practice on future growth in Europe
  • Capacity building in the field of management and entrepreneurship
  • Joint Call to Action to policy makers
  • Concrete action points for future collaborations of stakeholders in this field

with elaborated questions such as:

  • Good practices and entrepreneurship education
  • How can Europe become an entrepreneurial society
  • Can we educate entrepreneurs and innovations via education
  • How can we build capacity for value creation and innovation in Europe
More information on this workshop will be provided before the end of 2012. Some references on the above issues (in particular topics related to innovation and entrepreneurship) are already available on the EFMD Euractiv info-sharing portal as well as the 2012 roundtable site.

EFMD 2012 Roundtable at the European Business Summit


EFMD is engaged in a discussion with the European Commission to demonstrate the importance and the value of management research and management education – the notion of management covering the whole spectrum from operational capabilities to leadership competencies and entrepreneurship. EU funding instruments are essentially directed towards hard sciences and technology. Management as a social technology is almost non-existent in the EU programmes and is underestimated in its importance for the value creation process.

At the European Business Summit in April 2012, EFMD organised a roundtable on this subject with the theme “Management Skills for Growth” in line with the overall EBS theme “Skills for Growth” This invitation-only event took place on Thursday, the 26th April 2012 with around 30 participants, including senior policy makers and leaders from Business Schools and Businesses.

The opening statements of this roundtable were given by (in sequence):
  • Mr. Adrain Wooldridge, Management Editor, the Economist
    Management's role in value creation: are we carrying our weight in Europe? (moving beyond the 3% obsession)

  • Professor Santiago Iniguez, Dean, IE Business School
    Why the discipline of Management can make a difference for growth and what it means for management education and research

  • Dr. Alexander Von Gabain, Chairman of the Governing Board, European Institute of Innovation and Technology
    Embedding Entrepreneurship in European Programs. The example of the EIT
Dr. Richard Straub, Director of EFMD EU Affairs and Corporate Services, chaired and facilitated the discussion at the roundtable. At the session, the following topics were addressed:
  • Management skills and competencies as the blind spot in the European Programmes?
  • How important are management skills and how they can translate research into value?

Advisory Groups

The EFMD EU Affairs activities are supported by the following two groups: the EU Affairs Advisory Board and the EU Affairs Steering Committee.

The EU Affairs Advisory Board is composed of policy experts from the Industry, the EU-based institutions and think tanks. It aims to:

  1. provide strategic guidance for EFMD European Affairs activity;
  2. help in reaching key EU stakeholders

The EU Presidency Steering Committee is composed of deans of EFMD business schools, established in the Member States that will hold the Presidency of the European Union in the next coming months and years. It aims to:

  1. be the interface between EFMD and their respective governments for matters of common interests;
  2. bring to the EU policy makers the common concerns of EFMD members on issues related to management education, research and development.

Other Paper Work

In the coming decades, the world's population size and age-structure will undergo dramatic changes mainly due to low fertility rates, the retirement of the baby-boom generation and the continuous increase in life expectancy.

Moreover, technology had triggered a "secular change in society and the economy", resulting in the "flat world" and the rise of the "knowledge worker". The expansion of "high value knowledge intensive services" and the move towards more individual work patterns was forcing corporations to adapt to different ways of operating. This development has produced knowledge workers who have "multiple careers" and do not expect to retire at 60 or 65. Following a transformation perspective and taking into account the recent changes of the society, policy makers need to take an holistic approach. It will be important to take into consideration generational roles and responsibilities as well as take a new and positive perspective on the following issues:
  • Life Planning & Career Planning
  • Formal Educational Attainment
  • Lifelong Learning
  • Employee - Employer Contract
  • Solidarity between Generations
  • CSR
The paper produced by EFMD will firstly give some data on the current trend of the ageing population. Secondly, it will explore the threats and the opportunities that lie behind the future retirement of the baby-boom generation with particular emphasis on the category of the knowledge workers. The third chapter will present some reflection on successful answers that public and private sectors may give to the ageing phenomenon. In the end, some concluding remarks will give some input for discussion on the role that business schools should play in order to face the ageing trend.

There is no doubt that fundamental innovation in our social systems, in management and in lifelong learning will be required to address these issues. Apart from a general rethinking of social security and pension models, the real challenge is to preserve collective intelligence through the mobilization of management and leadership capabilities beyond current retirement dates and move education systems in the direction of genuine lifelong learning.

In this context, EFMD can facilitate a dialogue and can also influence change in this area, thanks to its network of contacts in the European Union and thanks to its role as a bridge between academia and business schools.

As result of this paper, a lively discussion might rise:
  • What role should the business schools play to actively help to address the issue of an ageing workforce?
  • What type of curricula changes should be planned and implemented to support 2nd and 3rd careers?
  • Should the EFMD take an active role in identifying best practices in this field and use its networking vehicles to promote the understanding and knowledge of the issue and solutions to it (conferences, workshops, advisory services, publications etc.)?

Policy Work

One of the EFMD EU Affairs’ priorities for the term ahead is to extend its outreach in European Affairs, particularly in relation to decision-making processes within the EU institutions. In this section, the EU Affairs team plans to regularly brief you on the advocacy activities which the team has been involved.

Regarding current EFMD advocacy activities at the EU level, our team has submitted papers in response to public consultations of the European Commission such as the EU 2020 strategy in January 2010. The team also submitted a letter to President José Manuel Barroso of the European Commission in July 2009, to emphasise management as the key ‘social technology’ to support the economic reform, social cohesion and sustainable economic development in Europe.

EFMD also carefully monitored activities in the European Parliament in particular the on-going discussions in the Committee of Culture and Education (CULT) and the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE). Our targeting debates are related to the Partnership between Universities and the Industry, Research and Innovation which are priorities in the post-crisis agenda of the EU. Our team also expressed its concerns to the Members in the European Parliament about the missing link between the community of European Business Schools and the EU institutions, and proposed to strengthen the dialogues between the two groups.
