About the Project

FORINT: Fortalecimiento de la
internacionalización entre las universidades
europeas y latinoamericanas

One of the outcomes of the FORGEC project and of the close cooperation between EFMD, Cuban universities and the Cuban Ministry of Higher Education for the FORGEC project, has been the development of an initiative for strengthening the collaboration between Cuban Universities and their European counterparts.

This proposal, submitted under the Erasmus + call 2016 has been favourably evaluated and the EU selected it for funding.

EFMD formed a consortium of seven Cuban institutions (six universities and the Ministry of Higher Education), two Panamanian universities and five European business schools and Higher Education Institutions to develop strategies for developing international programmes, research and for preparing the institutions for effective academic cooperation between Europe and Latin America.

During its three-year duration, the project FORINT aims at:

  1. Integrating the international dimension in the teaching, research, management and services of Cuban and Panamanian universities;
  2. Creating the capacity in the 6 Cuban and the 2 Panamanian institutions to facilitate their internationalisation;
  3. Developing operational links among the higher education institutions in European Union, Cuba and Panama;
  4. Strengthening the capacities to network effectively between Cuban / Panamanian HEIs;
  5. Providing easier access for the European HEIs to Cuba and Panama (visibility, information sessions in conferences, etc.).

Since October 2016, the project has achieved the following results:

  • More than 150 Latin American university senior managers took part in one of the seven capacity-building seminars organized in Europe and Latin America on HEI management, International Cooperation & Regionalisation or International Accreditation;
  • 9 awareness-building events in each partner institution to promote the project’s results and facilitate the adoption of the internationalization methodology developed through the project;
  • 8 self-assessment reports on the current status of internationalization, opportunities for development and challenges in each participating HEI;
  • 6 international conferences with dedicated session on the project attended by the project partners in Latin America and Europe.

For more information, please consult the FORINT project’s website or contact the EFMD team.

Strengthening Leadership and Strategic Management in Higher Education in Ethiopia

About the Project

The University Leadership and Management Capacity Development Project (ULMCD) is a multi-year programme geared towards strengthening of the higher education sector in Ethiopia, in the broader framework of economic and societal development policies to meet the quantitative and qualitative demand for a trained labour force.

Through the Higher Education Strategy Centre in Addis Ababa (HESC), 13 New Public Universities (NPUs) are being provided with training by an international consortium of the Maastricht School of Management (MSM, Lead Partner), the International Centre for development Oriented Research in Agriculture (ICRA), and EFMD which took over some of the activities of ESMU from April 2013.

Beyond the actual training delivery, the aim of the project is the institutionalisation of knowledge and resources on leadership and management within the Ethiopian higher education sector. The main purpose is to update and prepare senior administrators in the new Ethiopian universities on current trends and innovations in Higher Education worldwide, and their relevance for, and possible application in, Ethiopian Higher Education.

EFMD role in the project is to deliver a series of exposure visits (Europe), one-week training programmes in Ethiopia (e.g. quality assurance, financial management, research management), as well as consulting/coaching for Ethiopian universities.
