Global Focus Special Issue on Sustainable Business
- Taking the first steps towards understanding, implementing and managing sustainability from a cost/profit perspective This special issue of Global Focus on sustainability underlines EFMD’s commitment to the subject. As the supplement’s author, Jonathan Scott, makes clear, sustainability is about sensible business. It covers the legal, financial, economic, industrial, social and behavioural aspects of business, not just “going green”. In particular, sustainability is about measuring and controlling expenses wherever they arise, whether through the husbanding of scarce raw material resources or the use of energy. Measurement and control are something that every businessman or businesswoman can understand.
Nearly half a century ago in the 1970s, when the two “oil shocks” changed the industrial world forever by pushing up the price of crude oil and its derivates, there was a huge move to react by monitoring energy usage. Even such simple measures as closing warehouse doors or turning off unnecessary lighting were shown to provide significant savings. Once more we live in an era of high and rising costs – not just for energy but for all resources, including human ones. We owe it to future generations to reduce those costs as much as we can by adopting sustainable measures, which ensure sustainable business and have the happy side-effect of also helping to preserve our environment.
This supplement and its longer online version (link coming) provide some guidance as to how we might do that..
