Special Interest Group on Management Development 2.0
Abstract
The Special Interest Group (SIG) “Management Development 2.0” -‐ Applicable, innovative, and high-‐impact solutions for Management & Leadership Development” will provide an MD-‐solution –portfolio which gives participants a clear orientation 0n how they could improve established leadership / management development activities. Considering that there are several determinants for MD performance (e.g. architecture, processes, methods, vendors, evaluation), the SIG will consistently search for the most effective and applicable solutions for each area.
Background
In the past two decades expectations of management development have grown significantly. Companies invest billions of Euros in development activities and the installation of new units – Corporate Universities, Talent Management, Top Executive Programs etc. – in order to develop their leadership and management potentials. Following the recent worldwide DDI study, “Global Leadership Forecast 2011: Time for a Leadership Revolution”, there is strong evidence in support of this investment: Corporations with the highest quality leaders were 13 times more likely to outperform their competition in key bottom-‐line metrics.
Regarding these facts and figures there is little reason to deny the good conditions for management development. Unfortunately, the question of impact gives us cause for serious concern. Both the majority of MD customers and MD experts currently do not believe in the effectiveness of development measures. Only a third of leaders and HR professionals rate MD efforts as sufficiently effective. And following the Mannaz study “Innovation in Leadership Development”, the MD community itself has formulated “A Cry for Innovation”.
In order to ride the current MD tailwind, the experts have determined the necessity to improve architecture, processes, methods, selection of vendors, and evaluation of activities. Looking at the prevalence of MD solutions in these areas which are criticized sharply by the experts because of their limited effectiveness, the aspiration for redesign has to be radical and comprehensive.
The EFMD MD 2.0 Special Interest Group
The EFMD Management Development 2.0 (MD 2.0) Special Interest Group (SIG) initiative has been launched in response to the management development situation in organizations described above and as part of the EFMD ́s new “Excellence in Corporate Learning” strategy. The SIG will bring together MD representatives from selected organizations to work on the key issues of this topic.
The SIG will work out which components of established MD have to be revised and what the new solutions will look like in detail. To prepare a practical guideline for the participating organizations, the working process will comprise at least two steps:
Firstly, the group will analyze in depth the current state of the MD practices of the participating companies. These practices will be compared with the broader market view of current MD practices. This first step should help the participants to get a realistic assessment of their MD standards in comparison with benchmarks on different performance levels.
Secondly, impact driven solutions for MD architecture, processes, methods, vendor management, and evaluation tools will be defined and strategies for implementation discussed. An individual road map for how to increase the effectiveness of MD in each individual organization will be prepared for the participating organizations.
The Approach
On the basis of available knowledge about MD, the working group will develop applicable, innovative, and high-‐impact solutions for the issues. A systematic working process will be used in order to develop the MD 2.0 solution-‐portfolio:
- In depth interviews with each member of the working group
- Analysis and discussions of the MD practices of the working group
- Analysis, presentation, and critical reflection of approaches and solutions on the “MD market”
- Dialogue with subject matter experts from practice and academia
- Synopsis of applicable, innovative and high-‐impact MD solutions
- Written report which summarizes the working process of the group and the MD 2.0 solution-‐portfolio
The Outcomes
The collaborative working process of the SIG MD 2.0 is designed to deliver useful output for each participating organization. This output will be:
- Best practice sharing and exploration of different options for more innovative and high-‐impact oriented MD
- Exchange of the applicability and implementation challenges related to these new MD solutions
- Exchange of the personal roles, tasks and requirements MD professionals should cover
- Individual road maps for how to implement the MD 2.0 solution-‐portfolio and thereby increase the effectiveness of MD function
- A presentable report of the working process and results to communicate the innovative and impact driven positioning of the MD function internally and externally
Representatives
Each participating company commits to delegate an MD leader with significant responsibility for designing and implementing MD solutions as a group member dedicated to contributing to the outcomes described above.
SIG Duration
We expect the SIG MD 2.0 to have duration of approximately 12 months depending on the agreed work schedule and deliverables, the frequency of meetings and workshops (both virtual and physical), the research input required, and the associated EFMD Corporate Advisory Seminars (CAS) which comprise part of the SIG membership.
The Starting Point
Prof. Dr. Mario Vaupel, former founder and head of ERGO Management Academy, the Corporate University of ERGO Insurance Group, with 20 years experiences in MD, has agreed to facilitate the SIG.
Deutsche Telecom and ERGO Insurance Group have agreed to support the SIG MD 2.0 as initial participants.
Details of the final work schedule and specific challenges to be addressed within the SIG will be agreed upon by all SIG members once the project is fully underway.
Fee
The participation fee for EFMD members is € 2,500. This includes not only full participation in the SIG but also an additional two seats at the EFMD Corporate Advisory Service (CAS) seminar. The participation fee for non-‐EFMD members is € 3,000.
