“Executive Leadership Programme – Leaders’ teaching, shifting culture”

BHP Billiton is the world’s largest diversified resources company with 128,000 employees and contractors based in 26 countries. The company is governed by the Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and the Group Management Committee (GMC).

With the appointment of Andrew Mackenzie as CEO in May 2013, a vision to evolve the culture of BHP Billiton to focus on Productivity and “step-up” took hold. Under the leadership of the previous CEO, BHP Billiton had implemented an integrated systems and process platform known as the Operating Model (OM). The OM transformed the way we worked, however by focusing intensely on technical deployment, it also generated a compliance mindset. The new CEO sought to re-energise the culture and significantly change the way leaders engaged.

The Executive Leadership Programs (ELP) targeted the top 550 leaders across the company, was designed to be entirely leader-led, and included “cascade tools” that each participant used to extend the engagement and approach deeper into the organization. Through a series of three-day programs, intact senior leadership teams experienced an event that enabled them to take ownership of the cultural shift and build the behaviours and relationships to bring this agenda to life.

The approaches to be discussed on the webinar will include lessons in Leader led delivery, the challenges necessary to precipitate changes in leadership behaviour to affect the status quo, and the collaboration between functions and operations required to enable a shift in culture.
