International strategic partnerships between institutions of higher education in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region and Europe are becoming increasingly complex, operating across nation states, cultures, sectors - both private and public – many involving third party stakeholders and sponsors. The experience of international strategic alliances and partnerships can be a mixed one in terms of the near-term and long-term value that they add to the reputation and to portfolio of institutions and the extent to which they are consistent with national priorities and policy.

There is a strong case for a greater understanding of the critical success factors for managing sustainable “future-proof” Asia-Pacific/European strategic partnerships and overcome the management challenges they present.

How are strategic alliances and partnerships actually built and managed in HE? How do they evolve and mature? What are the different models and the pitfalls? To what extent is a proper assessment made of the potential reputational and financial risks. How are the risks and opportunities identified and managed collaboratively and institutionally? What does the future hold for such partnerships in an emerging world of massive on line education?

The aim of the School is to develop the leadership potential of senior managers in higher education involved or likely to be involved in major Asia-Pacific and European strategic partnerships by making them fully aware of:

  • The range of models and types of partnerships (at programme or institutional level; branch campuses);
  • The governance and management approaches associated with strategic partnerships, including frameworks for assessing risk and ensuring quality;
  • The implications of global strategic partnerships on professional services in universities (e.g. HR, IT, finances)

School Themes
The School will focus on the leadership and management of international strategic partnerships in higher education.

Participants will gain experience in making informed choices in decision-making processes for large partnerships. All ideas are firmly based on the context of University life across Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. The School uses the experience of EFMD and HUMANE to give unique insight into generic issues and challenges and to ensure that discussion draws on examples from a wide range of different national higher education systems.

The programme will be highly intensive offering an experiential learning experience to the participants. It will include plenary sessions and practical teamwork in small groups all through the week. One case study will be used throughout the week for participants to work on critical issues related to transnational strategic partnerships.

Participants will also be encouraged to bring examples from their institutions to feed into the discussions. The working language will be English, but facilitators are well used to dealing with various levels of language proficiency.

The programme will include the in-depth study of contrasting approaches being taken across Europe and the Asia-Pacific regions.

The School is a residential management development programme for fast track mid-career to senior managers and administrators in higher education bringing together individuals from across Asia-Pacific and Europe.

Applicants are nominated by their own head of administration, their deans or equivalent in their organisation’s hierarchy. They are selected by an EFMD- HUMANE panel with wide experience of leadership management development programmes.

Application criteria
The Asia-Pacific School is designed for mid-career to senior managers and administrators in higher education.

Applicants must during application provide:

  • A one page statement describing their qualifications and why they are interested in this Asia-Pacific School
  • A one (or maximum two) page curriculum vitae
  • A letter of support from their head of administration or equivalent senior manager

The number of participants is limited to 30. Applicants will know whether their application has been successful in the beginning of July 2017.
