Context
Higher education (HE) institutions seeking to stand out in an increasingly competitive and global higher education market cannot afford to provide anything less than top-quality professional services. This is true at every level: in the departments, schools and faculties, and at “the centre”.

Growth in research activity and student numbers, new forms of teaching and learning, and increasing expectations surrounding technology-supported, ‘anytime-anywhere’ services pose major management challenges.

Traditional professional service models are no longer sustainable. Some higher education institutions have launched transformation initiatives to deal with these challenges head-on; others, fearing a cultural backlash, have started more subtle, incremental change programmes.

Evidence indicates that nearly 70% of large-scale change programmes fail. Institutions must develop their leadership and management capabilities, their skills base and global networks to make their professional services transformation a success.

Objectives
The Summer School aims to develop the leadership potential of Senior HE Managers involved in transformational change processes. During the programme, they will be exposed to:

  • diverse approaches to the design and delivery of large scale transformation programmes, drawing on experiences from higher education and other sectors;
  • factors commonly associated with successful transformation programmes and those that tend to limit the chance of success;
  • real-life experiences of universities that have embarked on a transformation journey and offer to share their lessons learned.

Themes
The programme is designed around the following key themes:

  • inter-cultural competencies;
  • transformation design and delivery of a new operating model;
  • change communication
  • the ‘politics’ of change.

Format
The programme is intensive, based on an experiential learning approach. It will combine plenary sessions with practical teamwork in small cross-cultural groups.

Two case studies will expose participants to an in-depth analysis of different approaches to effecting lasting change. In addition, participants are encouraged to share experiences from their own institutions.

Senior speakers will candidly share their experiences of leading transformational change. Their contributions, along with the case studies, will provide the basis for the teamwork. Participants will gain experience in making informed choices in multi-disciplinary teams.

The Summer School leverages the combined experience of EFMD and HUMANE, offering unique insight into generic issues and challenges as well as access to examples from a wide range of different national higher education systems across Europe and further afield.

The language of the programme is English. Our facilitators are experienced in working with audiences from diverse linguistic backgrounds.

Who can apply?

  • Middle to Senior-level Managers, including heads of university administration
  • Managers and directors of service functions, faculty/school directors of administration
  • Managers and directors of large-scale transformational change programmes.

These change programmes may involve specific services (e.g. student support) or the broader reshaping of professional services that involve significant process redesign and restructuring. The programme will also benefit senior managers working in HE funding and regulatory agencies tasked to deliver system-level transformations.

Applicants are nominated by their own heads of administration, their deans or the equivalent in their organisation’s senior management team. They are selected by an EFMD - HUMANE panel with wide experience of leadership and management development programmes.

Application criteria

Applicants must during application provide:

  • A one page statement describing their qualifications and why they are interested in this Summer School
  • A one (or maximum two) page curriculum vitae
  • A letter of support from their head of administration or equivalent senior manager

The number of participants is limited to 30. Applicants will know whether their application has been successful in the beginning of June 2018.
